Psychotherapy myths abound. People think they have to be “crazy”, that it takes a really long time and is really expensive, and that there is a stigma attached to receiving counseling. But, in reality, there are more benefits and positives to receiving therapy than negatives:

  1. Memory tells me that according to research, the typical client sees a therapist for three sessions (the statistical median). That’s also consistent with my experience. The average (mean) may be higher as a result of the long-term clients. As I many times have said, occasionally to clients and frequently in class lectures, “Many times when a person comes to see me, they know what they want, they know what they need to do to get what… they just can;t give themselves permission to do it.” Thus, in many cases, the three sessions.
